Today, Stüssy stands as one of the most recognized streetwear brands in the world—but it all started in the laidback surf scene of Southern California.
Growing up around Laguna Beach, a hotspot for surfers and counter-culture communities, Shawn Stüssy began scribbling his signature on handcrafted surfboards in the early ’80s. Soon, that same logo appeared on T-shirts, hats, and simple apparel, turning heads locally. By 1984, with help from his friend Frank Sinatra Jr. (no relation to the singer), Stüssy officially launched as a brand. The ’90s saw Stüssy explode in popularity, opening a flagship New York store and expanding into Europe, solidifying its place in streetwear history.
The brand’s New York presence quickly became iconic, drawing streetwear enthusiasts for its distinctive designs and exclusive collaborations.
