Craig Starr

Craig Starr Gallery is a respected Upper East Side gallery, located just steps from Central Park and the city’s major museums. Founded in 2004 by Craig F. Starr—who previously spent two decades as a private art dealer—the gallery has built a reputation for its scholarly, museum-quality exhibitions and publications that explore the legacies of major 20th-century American and European artists.

The gallery often focuses on single-artist or tightly curated thematic shows, many of which are accompanied by rigorously researched catalogs. Past exhibitions have spotlighted figures like Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, and John Baldessari, with shows such as Accident: Robert Rauschenberg’s Printmaking Breakthrough 1962–65 and Souvenirs: Cornell Duchamp Johns Rauschenberg drawing attention for their thoughtful approach to art history.

With an emphasis on works on paper—such as prints, drawings, etchings, and screenprints—as well as painting and sculpture, the gallery presents approximately four to five exhibitions each year. It also participates in prominent art fairs like Frieze New York and Frieze Masters, showcasing key works to international audiences.

Craig Starr Gallery’s program is rooted in the belief that exhibitions should be both visually compelling and intellectually engaging. Its robust publications arm furthers this mission, producing in-depth texts and monographs that contribute to the broader understanding of the artists it features. The gallery continues to be an important destination for collectors, curators, and scholars alike, offering a quiet, elegant space to encounter art that has shaped—and continues to shape—contemporary visual culture.
