Was there a particular place, experience, or person in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your career in fashion?

Playing with Barbie. I had one in particular I loved named Crystal Barbie. She wore a glamorous gown and had clear heels with sparkles in them. I consider her my first client.

You started your career as an intern in Vogue New York, was there a particular moment that made you think, “This is where I belong”?

That feeling came quite quickly. I think the big moment was the first time I was ever on the set of a fashion shoot.

You mentioned that while interning at Vogue, Jessica Diehl invited you to your very first shoot which provided you with the opportunity to be on set with people you admired through magazines. Looking back, how do you think that opportunity shaped the way you now mentor and support emerging talent?

Jessica was very generous in that she asked my opinion a lot on what accessories or shoes went best with a look and I am the same now with my assistant. I think it’s important to feel involved and that it is a collaboration.

How did you approach styling in those early days? Did you already have a strong sense of your aesthetic, or did it evolve with experience?

I have always been into glamour.  I was obsessed with Marilyn Monroe and Madonna. I think that my aesthetic has evolved over time. You have adapt somewhat to the trends and what’s happening in fashion. That’s the exciting part.

In what ways has studying art history made you a more thoughtful or intentional stylist, especially when it comes to curating looks for major events or long-term client relationships?

I think it has helped me have an eye for proportion and color. Styling isn’t just about the dress or the garment it’s how it all comes together. All the parts must work together.

Was there a particular client or project that felt like a breakthrough moment for you?

This past year with Demi Moore has been quite extraordinary.  I’ve been working with her since 2009 so to have such a long term relationship with someone and to be able to do some many looks with them is pretty amazing

As someone who’s been in the industry for years, how do you define success now compared to when you first started?

Every red carpet is an opportunity to do better than the one before it so I try not to waste them.

I try to get better with every job.

What’s a dream you haven’t tackled yet?

Styling Nicole Kidman and I’d like to come out with a product.

As you look ahead, what excites you the most about the future of your career and personal life?

The idea that the right things will present themselves and that the adventure will continue.

Give us a rundown of your perfect 24hrs in NYC?

Staying at the Mercer and getting to sleep in those amazing beds.

Going to the gym.

Meeting a friend for lunch and walking around the city.

Seeing a Broadway show with my husband Gary and going to the polo bar for a burger and a slice of coconut cake.

Meeting friends for a drink out somewhere and then finding a spot to dance until 4 am.

I like the spontaneity of NYC. You never know what’s going to happen.
